A single question

Where do People Also Ask answers come from?

Short answer

People Also Ask answers come from web pages Google has indexed. They used to be single featured-snippet excerpts with one link. Now most are AI Overviews that summarize several pages and cite them. In our 149-answer harvest, 147 carried links, drawn from 429 different sites and led most often by Reddit, YouTube and Quora.

People Also Ask answers come from web pages Google has indexed, and the links under each answer show which ones. It’s the first thing to check when you judge how accurate People Also Ask information is, because an answer can’t be better than its sources.

What Google does with those pages has changed. It used to lift one passage from one page. Now it mostly writes a short summary from several pages and cites them.

The classic model: a featured snippet inside the box

Google’s documentation still describes the original setup. Featured snippets are “special boxes where the format of a regular search result is reversed, showing the descriptive snippet first”, and they “can also appear within a related questions group (also known as ‘People Also Ask’)”. Asked how to mark a page as a featured snippet, Google answers: “You can’t.” Its systems decide (Google Search Central). The Visual Elements gallery says the same about PAA: when a user expands a question, “they’re shown a featured snippet” (Google Search Central).

Google’s help page for searchers puts it simply: “The featured snippets come from websites that Google finds”, picked for how well they answer the question and how helpful they are (Google Search Help). In that model an answer was one passage from one page, with one link. If it was wrong, you knew exactly where it came from.

The 2026 model: an AI Overview with citations

That model is mostly gone. Search Engine Roundtable reported on 9 September 2026 that in AlsoAsked’s sample of 19.2 million English-language queries, 97% of PAA answers in the first week of September were AI Overviews, up from 86% in August. About 14 months earlier it was roughly 12% (Search Engine Roundtable).

Google says its AI features may use “query fan-out”, “issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources” to build a response, which lets it show “a wider and more diverse set of helpful links” than a classic search (Google Search Central). That’s why a modern PAA answer carries a list of sources instead of one.

You can see it in our data, even though none of our three results pages showed an AI Overview at the top. Google’s answer to “Is SEO still worth it in 2026?” opens with a verdict, credits margen.net, then names “Reddit ยท r/digital_marketing +1” and “Nipralo Technologies” mid-text as it goes. That’s a summary with citations, not an excerpt. Funnily enough, Google’s own answer to “Where do the people also ask come from?” still described answers as “Webpage Excerpts” with a link “to the original website where the text was found”, while citing seven different pages itself.

What 149 answers tell us about the sources

We harvested three Google results pages on 27 September 2026 (“people also ask”, “people also ask tool” and “people also ask seo”) and saved every answer with its links.

  • 147 of the 149 answers had at least one source link. The other two were labelled “AI Mode replied:” and had none.
  • Each harvest’s lead sources (the first link shown with an answer) came from 30 different sites. Across all three harvests, 64 different sites led an answer.
  • Counting every link, the answers cited sources 1,181 times, across 429 different sites. That’s just under 8 links per answer (6.3, 8.1 and 9.5 per harvest).
  • The range was wide. “Does Google have a free SEO tool?” cited 23 pages. “What is black Google?” and “What is the first thing ever googled?” cited one each.

These lead sites showed up most often:

Lead sourceAnswers it led
reddit.com22
youtube.com18
quora.com12
meetglimpse.com7
semrush.com5
alsoasked.com4

Grouped by type (our own rough grouping), 59 of the 147 lead links went to forums, Q&A sites, social posts or video. 37 went to SEO and marketing companies, 25 to other brands’ own sites, 19 to news and tech publishers, 6 to education or reference sites such as Coursera and Wikipedia, and 1 to a personal blog. Of all 1,181 links, exactly one pointed to a .gov site.

Real examples from the harvest

  • A personal blog from 2022. “How to get rid of people also ask on Google?” was led by a personal blog post dated June 2022 (mmazzarolo.com), backed by Stack Exchange, Reddit and Quora threads.
  • Wikipedia for a buzzword. “What is SEO now called?” was led by Wikipedia’s article on generative engine optimization.
  • A Facebook post over Google’s own page. “What is Google’s old name?” led with a Facebook post. Wikipedia and Google’s own company story page came further down.
  • A third party on Google’s tools. “Does Google have a free SEO tool?” was led by DesignRush. Of its 23 links, one was a Google site.
  • A vendor on its own product. “Can I use Ubersuggest for free?” was led by neilpatel.com, the tool’s home.
  • Same question, different lead. “Is SEO paid or free?” was led by Forbes. “Is SEO free or paid?”, in the same harvest, was led by a YouTube video.

What this means for you

If you’re reading: the lead link is a starting point, not a verdict. Open two or three cited pages before you trust a claim.

If you’re publishing: Google says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode”, and no markup gets you into a featured snippet either. What helps is being worth citing. Answer the question in the first sentence, keep it accurate and dated, and make each section readable on its own. The nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet controls limit what Google can show from your page in both formats. The practical side is in how to rank in People Also Ask.

To see who Google cites on your own topics, PAA Box’s “with answers” mode (part of PAA Box Pro, coming soon) saves Google’s answer and source for each question it unpacks and exports them to CSV. A D0 pass with answers takes about 30 seconds.
